Our story

Hundreds of thousands of people visit Newark's Ironbound yearly to celebrate their shared heritage. From folk-dancing to special performances by Portuguese recording artists, this festival aims to contribute to the celebration of our shared roots within communities outside of Portugal.
We're committed to continuing traditions & invite your support to enjoy this year's festival. Together, we can ensure that Portugal Day in Newark remains the beloved celebration we all look forward to enjoying.

About Dia De Portugal

June 10th commemorates the death of Luís Vaz de Camões in 1580, revered as Portugal's national poet. On this day, Portugal's history, culture, and all Portuguese-speaking people are celebrated worldwide.

Newark witnessed the arrival of Portuguese immigrants starting in the early 1900s, with a significant wave beginning in the 1950s. Many chose to settle in the Ironbound, soon earning it the affectionate moniker of "Little Portugal".

Today, Portugal Day represents the richness of Portuguese culture, the unifying power of the Portuguese language, and the shared history that has shaped generations of the past and future.
First organized in 1979 by the Bernardino Coutinho Foundation, Portugal Day in Newark attracts hundreds of thousands event goers annually. The official Dia De Portugal Newark, a 501c (3) non-profit organization, has organized the festival since 2015.
We host a variety of cultural and social events throughout Newark leading up to the day of the Parade each year. Planning for the Fado Night, Honorary Gala, Folklore Festival, Parade and Street Festival require months of time & effort by our Committee members.
We thank all volunteers, partners & sponsors for their support in making these events possible.
