Captain Augusto "Augie" Acabou
Posthumous Grand Marshal
Augusto Domingos "Augie" Acabou, a lifelong resident of Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood, tragically lost his life in the line of duty on July 5, 2023, while battling a fire as a Newark firefighter. Born into a hardworking Portuguese family, Augie was raised with a foundation of humility, dedication, and solidarity. After graduating from East Side High School in 1996, he began his professional journey in 1997 at HMH JFK Hospital, where he started in the laundry department before transitioning to a role as a security officer. In 2013, he achieved a lifelong dream by graduating as a Newark firefighter with Class 43, going on to serve with immense pride as a member of Engine 16.
Known for his joyful and generous spirit, Augie possessed a contagious personality and was always ready to sing, play the guitar, perform impressions, or play a lighthearted prank to bring a smile to those around him. He was also a passionate athlete, having played high school football, practiced boxing, and participated in local softball teams. Described by friends and colleagues as a selfless and inspiring individual, Augie never sought recognition for his many good deeds, yet he left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
A devoted son to Manuel and Maria (Da Cunha) Acabou, a beloved brother to João and Miguel, and the cherished partner of Cynthia Gulics, Augie’s memory remains a vibrant presence within his family and among his friends and fellow firefighters. The entire community continues to honor his legacy—a testament to a life defined by extraordinary courage, boundless generosity, and an unwavering commitment to public service.
