Captain Maik Alexandre
2026 Community Service Award
Captain Maik Alexandre was born at St. James Hospital in Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood. At eighteen months old, he moved with his parents to North Newark, where he was raised and began his education. He attended First Avenue School and the Dom Diniz Portuguese School, fostering an early and enduring connection to the Portuguese language and culture. After graduating from Queen of Peace High School, he pursued a career in public safety, first graduating from the Essex County Police Academy and serving as a corrections officer in Caldwell. In 2001, he graduated from the Newark Police Academy, marking the official beginning of his distinguished tenure with the city’s police force.
Throughout his career with the Newark Police Department, Captain Alexandre has served in numerous units and departments, gaining comprehensive experience across every corner of the city. His rise through the ranks is a testament to his dedication: he was promoted to Sergeant in 2017 and Lieutenant in 2019. By 2021, he took on the role of Executive Officer for the Metro Precinct and later for the 3rd Precinct in the Ironbound. In 2023, he reached the rank of Captain and was appointed to lead the 3rd Precinct, a position he holds today while maintaining a strong and constant presence within the local community.
As the son of Portuguese immigrants from Avenal, in the municipality of Cadaval, Captain Alexandre remains deeply proud of his heritage. He continues to honor his roots by regularly visiting his family’s homeland, bridging his commitment to the city of Newark with the cultural lineage that continues to shape his life and service.
