Joe Rendeiro
2026 Lifetime Achievement Award
Joe Rendeiro was born in Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood to Portuguese immigrants Maria (Zezinha) and António Rendeiro, who arrived from Murtosa in the late 1940s. Raised in a household that deeply prioritized the values of hard work, education, and heritage, Joe began his academic journey at Ann Street School before attending Essex Catholic High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Education from Seton Hall University and later obtained a master’s degree in Administration and Supervision, as well as Bilingual/Bicultural Education, from Kean University. Driven by a lifelong commitment to learning, he continued his advanced studies at prestigious institutions including Fordham University and Columbia University’s Teachers College.
Joe’s professional career was defined by a profound commitment to public service and the Newark educational system. He began his tenure in 1976 as an ESL teacher at Wilson Avenue School, eventually rising to key leadership roles as the vice-principal of Ann Street School and, subsequently, the principal of Hawkins Street School—a position he held with distinction for 16 years. Over decades of dedicated service, he mentored and inspired generations of students within a vibrant, culturally diverse community.
Parallel to his career in education, Joe remained a pillar of the Luso-American community. He played a vital role in founding and leading several organizations dedicated to civic engagement, educational advancement, and the preservation of Portuguese culture. Married for over four decades to his wife, Dercilia, Joe is the proud father of two and grandfather of two. Today, he continues to be guided by the same principles of family, service, and cultural pride that have defined his life and legacy.
