2026 Man of the Year
Luís Almeida was born in Pedralva, Anadia—famously known as the capital of Portugal’s Bairrada region—and emigrated to the United States in 1975 at the age of 13. He began his education at Wilson Avenue School before graduating from Kearny High School in 1980. Committed to his academic and professional growth, he attended Drew University, where he earned a degree in Economics in 1984, establishing the foundation for a successful career in entrepreneurship and business management.
In 1987, Luís returned to Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood to work at Seabra's Supermarket, where he gained extensive experience in the food industry and local commerce. Driven by an ambitious entrepreneurial spirit, he eventually launched his own business venture, opening his first supermarket in the Five Corners area. In 1993, he founded the now-renowned Emporium 112 Supermarket, which has since become a landmark institution within the community.
Supported by his wife, Angélica, and their daughters, Luís has built a thriving family business defined by the values of hard work, dedication, and a deep-seated commitment to the community he serves every day.
