Emb. Maria Amelia Paiva
2026 Woman of the Year
Ambassador Maria Amélia Maio de Paiva was born on January 21, 1961. She holds a degree in History from the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Letters and completed the curricular portion of a Master’s degree in International Relations at the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences (ISCSP). Her distinguished diplomatic career began in 1988, following her admission as an embassy attaché. Over the years, she has held various leadership roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including serving as the Head of Division for South and Central America within the Directorate-General for Bilateral Relations, a department she also led on an interim basis.
On the international stage, Ambassador Paiva has represented Portugal in numerous high-profile missions. She served as the Portuguese Ambassador to both Poland and Mozambique, and held the role of non-resident Ambassador to Mauritius, the Seychelles, Eswatini, and Tanzania. Her extensive consular experience includes serving as the Consul General of Portugal in Toronto, Canada, and Newark, United States. Furthermore, she has lent her expertise as an International Relations Consultant for the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic and served as the President of the Commission for Equality and Women’s Rights.
In 2021, she was promoted to the rank of Ambassador, Minister Plenipotentiary of the 1st Class. This prestigious promotion recognizes a diplomatic journey defined by professional excellence, analytical rigor, and an unwavering dedication to the representation and defense of the Portuguese State.
