Matthew Nunes, born on November 9, 2007, is a proud descendant of a Portuguese family. Raised in Newark, New Jersey, he attended Lafayette Street School for his primary education and is currently a student at East Side High School. Although he faced academic hurdles in his early years, Matthew’s journey is defined by an unwavering determination to overcome every challenge. A significant turning point occurred in the eighth grade, when he redoubled his focus on his studies—a commitment that fundamentally shifted his academic trajectory and paved the way for his future success.
In high school, Matthew’s dedication earned him a place in the prestigious Early College program at Essex County College, supported by the mentorship of Vice Principal Mr. West. As a result of his tireless effort, Matthew will graduate high school having already earned an Associate’s Degree, effectively completing two years of university-level studies alongside his high school diploma. His academic excellence has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Essex County "Unsung Heroes" award, various merit distinctions, and a consistent presence on the Honor Roll.
Beyond the classroom, Matthew remains deeply connected to his faith and community as an active volunteer at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Newark. He places great value on his close relationships with his parents, siblings, and friends, and is a passionate soccer enthusiast, particularly as a dedicated fan of Sport Lisboa e Benfica. Since childhood, he has harbored a profound love for aviation, a passion sparked by summer family trips to Portugal. Looking ahead, Matthew intends to relocate to Portugal to pursue a career in the aviation industry. His story is one of true perseverance, demonstrating the power of transforming difficulties into motivation and proving that one should never give up on their dreams.
